Tara was a shy and insecure witch who met Willow at a Wicca meeting in college (4.10 Hush). The two became friends, and practised magic together. They fell in love and came out as a couple and Tara blossomed. She cared very much about Willow, and also about Dawn who she was very close to, sensing that she too wasn’t properly part of the Scoobies. Tara’s family came to Sunnydale and the Scoobies realised that they had been repressing Tara by telling her she was part-demon, which she wasn’t at all (5.06 Family). The Scoobies, led by Buffy, stood up for Tara and she became an integral member of their group. When Willow started to use magic too much, Tara warned her that it could be dangerous but Willow couldn’t stop. Tara left Willow, and they only got together again when Willow could prove that she no longer was addicted to magic. Tara was tragically shot soon after by Warren and died suddenly (6.19 Seeing Red).

I loved Tara and was so sad when she died. I’m also glad they picked Amber Benson as Tara.

I loved Tara, she was such a lovely person and the character’s development through season 4, 5 and 6 was really fascinating and well written. Willow and Tara were so good together, and good for each other. I agree that Kennedy and Willow didn’t feel quite right but when Kennedy sees Willow work her magic in Chosen and tells her she’s a Goddess is a real tear-jerker for me!!

I loathed Tara as a character and found her flat, utterly boring, and absent of personality. She lacked the humor and duality of the other Scooby significant others –Anya, Oz, Cordy. Her only purpose was seemingly to act awkward, worry about and moon over Willow.

What? I absolutely love the character of Tara (in fact, she’s my favorite character of not just BTVS, but of the ever.) She’s not flat or boring, and she does have a great and wonderful personality. Personally, I care more about this character than I did about any other character I’ve ever seen. Of course, that’s just my opinion. Others have their’s, even if I strongly disagree with them.

One thing that has puzzled me for ages… in ‘Family’ Tara did the spell that accidentally made all demons invisible to the Scoobies. Tara was not invisible to the Scoobies. Surely this was sufficient evidence that she wasn’t a demon without the need for Spike’s punch on the nose to confirm it?

That’s true, All4Spike, I never thought of that.

Sorry, but I disagree with both, Tara’s spell was supposed to “hide the demon part of her” so Willow and the Scoobies would never know about it and never judge her, or hate her, or whatever…
The spell wasn’t meant to make her invisible, only her “demon half”, what would be the point of being completely invisible to Willow and the Scoobies???
All4Spike on April 7th, 2007 at 5:44 pm
Hyperk, the whole point was that the spell didn’t work as Tara had intended. Instead of hiding her (supposed) demon half from the Scoobies, it made all demons invisible to them. Even as only a ‘half breed’ demon, which is what vampires are considered to be, they couldn’t see Spike. So if her father’s assertion had been true, as a ‘half breed’ demon Tara should have been invisible too.
She wasn’t invisible to them, so she should have realised she wasn’t part demon.
Have I cleared it up or made it more confusing?

I just have a little question : Is Tara already ‘gay’ before meeting Willow ?
HarFang on April 28th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
I am sure she was.
In Tough Love, Willow and Tara have an argument because Tara fears that Willow’s homosexuality might just be a “phase”, since Willow was straight until she met her. This suggests that Tara , on the other hand, was already gay then (to use Willow’s phrase, she had already “established her lesbo street cred”).
Moreover, in Family Mr Maclay says that Tara has been a witch since she was in her teens, and witchcraft is used as a metaphor for homosexuality throughout season 4 and part of season 5.
