Taking back the gift

Taking back the gift

In 7.17 Lies My Parents Told Me, Buffy says that if she was given the choice again, she’d let Dawn die to save the world.

Giles: “Ah, yes, but things are different, aren’t they? After what you’ve been through, faced with the same choice now, you’d let her die.”
Buffy: “If I had to…to save the world. Yes.”

This can be a reference to what Joyce/the First told Dawn in 7.07 Conversations With Dead People.

Joyce: “Things are coming, Dawn. Listen, things are on their way. I love you, and I love Buffy, but she won’t be there for you.”
Dawn: “What? Why are you…?”
Joyce: “When it’s bad, Buffy won’t choose you. She’ll be against you.”

I really didn’t like this quote. In The Gift, as at any other time, Buffy should have sacrificed Dawn if it would mean saving the world. But the entire point was that she loved Dawn too much to let that happen. It was love trumping logic, even as seen in The Gift:

GILES: If the ritual starts, then every living creature in this and every other dimension imaginable will suffer unbearable torment and death … including Dawn.
BUFFY: Then the last thing she’ll see is me protecting her.

Even though Dawn would have died anyway, she was willing to put everything on the line to protect her family.

I think the main reason for Buffy saving Dawn was cos she had just lost her Mum so she wanted to save a member of her family as she couldn’t save Joyce.
In Season 7 now that Buffy’s had time to properly weigh up certain aspects she decides that it would be acceptable if she sacrificed Dawn to save the world.

To ant4buffy: I think you may be right about that. Buffy was still greiving for her mother and she wasn’t about to grieve for her sister, also I think she’d also come to understand that sacrificing herself instead is even worse because the world actually needs her.

It nicely ties up with that happened in season 2, when Buffy had to kill Angel to save the world…
And thank you for finally clarifying Joyce’s cryptic message, ormaybemidgets.
