Spike takes flowers to the Summers’ house in 5.17 Forever in memory of Joyce. He says he liked Joyce as she didn’t treat him like a freak and she always had a “nice cuppa” for him. We saw Joyce and Spike have hot chocolate together in 3.08 Lover’s Walk, and chatting together in Crush.

There was an uncomfortable moment in Becoming- I can’t remember which part- where Spike and Joyce are sitting in the living room when the truce has been called… Joyce says “Have we met?” and Spike reminds her of the time she hit him in “School Hard”. These two characters always go together very well. They do have an interesting relationship.

They are like cheese and sandwiches - a good match.
But what I don’t get is what Willow means when she picks up the flowers Spike threw in fury, when Xander accuses Spike for only wanting to score with Buffy: “Xander, there’s no card.”
I’m not dumb, I swear, just don’t get it.

Xander was trying to say that Spike was only leaving the flowers in order to impress Buffy but Willow points out that there was no card with the flowers, so Buffy wouldn’t have known who left them.
So, Spike was leaving the flowers because he liked Joyce, that was the only reason, not to impress Buffy because he didn’t sign a card.

alrighty, that’s what I thought, but I need pure information. Thanks!

One of the reasons which makes me like Joyce is the way she deals with Spike.
I think that Spike sees Joyce like a kind of mother, and that Joyce sees him like a “good-lost-soul” who can be really affect by love’s feelings (like in ‘Lover’s Walk’)

I am not sure that Joyce has that clear an opinion on Spike. When she learns that he’s in love with Buffy, she freaks out. (even though the way she manages to place the blame on Buffy is rather unexpected!)
Concerning Lover’s Walk, I know that Joyce could hardly have prevented Spike from entering the house. But it really looks at if she welcomed him in, even though she cannot ignore that he is a murderous, evil monster ! Sure, he’s broken-hearted and pathetic, but is that a reason to have chocolate with him ?!
On a side note, this attitude seems to be a family trait. All three Summers women have a soft spot for Spike, and he in turn goes out of his way to help them.
