There seems to be a continuing theme that Buffy wears dungarees (overalls) when she’s sad. She wears them in 2.11 Ted after she thinks she killed Ted; in 2.22 Becoming (Part Two) before boarding the bus to run away; in 3.12 Helpless when arriving, sans her power, to save her mother; and in 2.04 Inca Mummy Girl when she wears them to hunt Ampata instead of going to the dance.

Perhaps in ‘Inca Mummy Girl’, she was sad that she didn’t get to go to the dance?

It could be a theory I actually noticed this too..

My dad pointed out that her clothing really seems to mirror her mood — she wears baggy clothes when she is upset or depressed, “cute” clothes when she is feeling happy, etc.

That’s very true.
But so do I too.
When I’m happy I dress up in “happy coulors”
when I’m sad I put on my buffy-overall

what’s this, then?
when i searched for overalls a while ago nothing came up, so i posted the ’security overalls’ suggestion. now i search again and here is ’sad overalls’, mocking me with its shiny buckles.
whoda thunk searching could be so complicated?

I had noticed the same thing ; her outfit at the end of season 2 is a horror. I’m glad they dropped the idea, or season 6 would have given us fashion nightmares !
