Wearing sackcloth and ashes was a sign of mourning death or penitence. This term refers to the ancient Hebrew custom of indicating humility before God by wearing a coarse cloth and dusting oneself with ashes.
In Long Day’s Journe”:
Gwen to Gunn: “I’m surprised. A few months ago, she was ready to wear sackcloth and ashes for you. When did the landscape change?”
Gwen’s referring to Fred’s reaction after Gunn’s momentary death in 4.02 Ground State.

It was pretty interesting reading up on sackcloth and ashes. A modern day version of it is wearing black bands. I have often seen athletes do this by wearing a black band on their arm or some version on their uniform.
The instance that stands out most for me was after 9/11. Often I would see police officers and firefighters wearing black bands over their badges in mourning for all who we lost.
