Remembering you

2701.jpg

When originally shown, the Buffy episode 4.08 Pangs was immediately followed by the Angel episode 1.08 I Will Remember You, where Buffy shows up in LA, angry at Angel for not telling her he’d come back to town. In 4.09 Something Blue, Buffy mentions having seen Angel in L.A. for five minutes (seen in 1.08 I Will Remember You) though fans will remember that she actually saw him for much longer. Angel became human again, and he and Buffy became a couple, realising they had everything they wanted. When Angel realised the consequences (he wouldn’t be able to brood as much) he asked the Powers That Be to make him a vampire again. They reversed time so that only Angel would remember the events of that day.

There are only 3 episodes of Buffy/Angel that me cry everytime I watch them and that one is one of them (In case you care, the other two are Passion and Becoming pt. 2)!

  2. ant4buffy on July 21st, 2005 at 12:36 pm

What i don’t get about the I remember you episode is that Angel basically gets the oracles to turn back time because he cannot fight alongside Buffy.
Yet, at the end of season 1 of Angel they discover the prophecy that Angel will be made human if he helps in the oncoming battles.
But he got all this in this episode so why were they gunning for it for the rest of the series?

  3. Mel on July 21st, 2005 at 3:46 pm

    hey Ant

That always got me thinking too.

He seems happy that the Shanshu Prophecy says that one day he will become human again, but he gives it up in the episode.

One reason though could be, that the Shanshu states that this will only happen after so many apocalyptic battles and that Angel will play a major part in The Apocalypse so maybe if becomes human after all the battles, Buffy won’t be in so much danger.

  4. ant4buffy on July 22nd, 2005 at 7:41 am

Yeh i spose. i just didn’t really like that idea. to want something all series that you got a few episodes before. besides if he worked out more he could be tough again - look at wesley

  5. marvin21st on July 22nd, 2005 at 1:28 pm

As A Spike fan I would just like to say (because he would have) I does not say Angel will become human but a vampire with a soul.

  6. chrisjankunas on July 22nd, 2005 at 8:03 pm

It was “the” vampire with a soul - it refers to Angel obviously!

  7. Abby M. on July 22nd, 2005 at 8:22 pm

I don’t know, Spike is techncially ‘the’ vampire with a soul just as much as Angel is.

  8. mairceridwen on July 23rd, 2005 at 12:31 am

I always thought a great buffy comic book (or even *shudder* fanfiction) character would be a slayer who was sired (and had slayer + vampire strength) and then somehow wound up getting her soul back (from either a curse or that trial that spike had to go through). Did anyone ever write about that in comics or fanfic?

  9. marvin21st on July 23rd, 2005 at 4:38 am

Well there is Blade. But they dont go into the soul side of things he is supposed to have not lost all of his humanity.

  10. marvin21st on July 23rd, 2005 at 4:39 am

Thanks Abby M. that is exactally what I mean.

  11. Mel on August 7th, 2005 at 10:40 am

Angel signed away the Shanshu Prophecy in the finale Not Fade Away.

It was one of the conditions when he was initiated into the Black Thorn.

  12. Abby M. on August 19th, 2005 at 1:36 am

Yeah, the fith is the last season of Angel.

  13. Puja on August 21st, 2005 at 11:38 pm

Unless of course you’re an author like me and the plot bunnies WON’T LEAVE YOU ALONE!

Then you start writing a set of scripts for a sixth season of Angel in your spare time. They’re going up on t’internet at some point, should anyone be interested.

To go back to the earlier argument; Angel was told that if he stayed human, then Buffy would die. Which is actually quite true, when you think about it.

If he’d stayed human, then he never would’ve gone to Wolfram and Hart, never would’ve got the amulet and Spike would never have destroyed the Hellmouth. Therefore she probably would’ve died in the final battle if Angel had stayed human.

Angel DOESN’T sign the Shanshu prophecy. If you look carefully, he only writes agel (without the “N”)!!!!!
Spike cannot be THE vampire with a soul because the shanshu prophecy came out when angel got a soul!!!

  16. Puja on August 29th, 2005 at 9:29 pm

B&A4E: Just looked at that section again and there’s a bump of his hand to write an ‘n’. It’s not visible on the final signature, because it’s thick ink/blood, but he definitely writes an ‘n’.

The prophecies of Aberdjian actually were written long before either Angel or Spike got a soul. So you can’t count chronology for or against either one of them.

  17. lins11 on August 29th, 2005 at 10:22 pm

I agree Puja…aren’t prophecies meant to see the future…thats the whole point! Otherwise they would be called diaries. Hope that Joss can pick up this thread, as its something that we all want to know about!

  18. mairceridwen on August 29th, 2005 at 11:49 pm

    Puja is very wise

  19. Buffy & Angel 4EVER on September 1st, 2005 at 11:40 am

And spike isn’t the vampire with a soul because in i will remember u when he is talking to the oracles Angel says: It was the demons blood. It wasn’t the Powers-That-Be that did this?
and then they answer him by saying: The POwers-That-Be? Did u save humanity? Avert the Apocolypse?
So it means that Angel is the vampire with a soul that will become Human after averting the Apocolypse

  20. Buffy & Angel 4EVER on September 1st, 2005 at 11:45 am

Do u think Buffy remembers what happened? Cause she does say “I’ll never forget”
Do u know that the title of this episode is the same as the song in the end of the episode Angel when Buffy kisses him??

  21. lins11 on September 1st, 2005 at 3:11 pm

The Powers that Be would KNOW that in the future Spike would get his soul back though — just like they knew that darkness was coming. Am not saying that the prophacy is talking about Spike am just saying that they would know that he would also get a soul and that the prophacy could mean he would be made human.

  22. MagicBone on December 31st, 2005 at 11:50 pm

Hang on, rewind a sec, the Powers That Be know, like, everything that’s gonna happen but they have to wait until the right time to intervene. They knew that Spike would get his soul back but it was just timing that Angel & co read it when Angel was the only vampire with a soul there was. Maybe the prophecy (maybe, just saying) is actually about Spike and not Angel and they (the PTB) meant for Angel to read it early on so that it would be a sort of motivation, or something, for him. For him to keep fighting long enough to stop the Senior Partners and stuff. MAYBE.

“However, I do like to think that all four of them survived.”

My opinion is the Gunn dies after/during, based on:

ILLYRIA: You’re fading. You’ll last 10 minutes at best.

And she seems to be pretty accurate:

ILLYRIA: Wesley. This wound is mortal.

    And:

ILLYRIA: But I can’t help. You’ll be dead within moments.

Of course this isn’t canon; just speculation.

“We are not supposed to know whether or not they survived, as what really matters is just that they keep on fighting.”

    Exactly. I loved the finale.

  24. Angel242 on January 27th, 2006 at 2:50 pm

Yes, It was a very good final,

Joss knows when to end an serie.
I’m sure many people don’t agree with me, but I’m happy that he cancelled both shows (Buffy, angel) before they became boring and a repeat.
Charmed should have been cancelled long time ago, not that I don’t like the show, it’s just every episode is an Repeat!

  25. Ringo123 on May 18th, 2006 at 2:14 am

I picked up the new Angel comic. It was pretty good. In it Angel, Spike, Gunn and Ileria all made it out of the battle. Gunn has an eye patch which I assume he lost in the season finale. They also meet up with Lorne but he doesn’t come back to the team. In the new comics it is mostly Angle solo on his quest for redemption.

  26. BringTheNoise on May 21st, 2006 at 11:23 pm

I’ve just been watching Season 1 again. I figure that Angel doesn’t accept humanity in this episode because he sees that the Apocalypse is coming, but the Shansu prophecy refers to being given humanity as a reward for his action during the Apocalypse - so he will have earned it, and presumably the world will be safer post-Apocalypse.

  27. Engel on November 7th, 2006 at 10:35 pm

This is no doubt one of the saddest and most byronic episodes with Buffy and Angel. And to join in on that Shanshu argument, The Powers That Be will turn Angel human, and The Powers also recognize Angel as their warrior for good and many other things. Angel has done more than Spike, Angel even gave up his once chance to become the boyfriend of Buffy and to experience the pinochio effect with the black thorn, but I believe that contract doesn’t change a bit. Destiny is something you can’t stop from happening. And Angel is the one in the Prophesies of Aberjian, I believe so. Just go through Spike and Angels history and compare everything then make a choice.

  28. Wynter on November 8th, 2006 at 12:32 am

THERE IS NOTHING ON THE PROPHECY THAT SAYS IT’S ANGEL’S DESTINY!!! I’m sorry but you gotta stop mentioning it like there was a big disclaimer on the scroll that said “FYI, forget the ‘vampire with a soul’ crap, we really just mean Angel *WINK WINK*”

As for the rest of your post…I’m writing a reply, believe you me, but it’s not even near finished yet and I have Sociology shizzle to do so I’m gonna post it tomorrow. But it will come.

P.S. Sorry for pverly-bitchiness in my recent posts, I’m really pissed off at something at the moment, so it’s the driving force behind my replies. Mixed with the fact that I will defend Spike to the death, not a very good combination.

  29. Engel on November 9th, 2006 at 12:00 am

I know it doesn’t mention Angel by name but the vampire with a soul will have his connections to the powers that be cut of.. And Angel is the one that has it. I like Spike, I really do. I’ve always hated Angel until I got more insight in his history and character. When Spike got a soul I just thought he wasn’t cool anymore. And it’s okay your a bit pissed, but I’ve really gone through all episodes and studied everything with the prophesies of Aberjian and the powers. But I’ll defend Angel to somewhat unlife. So see ya;) =0P

  30. jeska on December 29th, 2006 at 5:01 pm

    hey
did any of you ever notice that it says THE vampire with a soul
it doesnt mention angel or spike so if ya ask me one of them is gonna die and whoevers left standing is the one that is referred to in the prophecies of Aberdjian

  31. Giles on December 30th, 2006 at 1:02 pm

Well, I personally don’t think that it really matters to whom the Shanshu Prophecy was referring, as the prophecy is no longer relevant and it looks as though we’re never going to find out anyway.

I like to think that it was about Angel, anyway. He was the original vampire with a soul.

If the prophecy WAS about Spike, though, would Angel signing it off affect Spike’s destiny? Or does it mean that since Angel was the one who signed it, it was definitely referring to him?

I’m confusing myself and others around me. I’ll go now.

  32. Fredless on January 18th, 2007 at 2:04 am

OK, For what it is worth I am putting my two cents in. I think the prophecy refers to Spike, and here is why. Angel got his soul by accident, or misfortune, or fortune, or however you want to look at it. It was forced on him, he never wanted it.

Spike on the other hand, fought for his soul. He earned it, he wanted redemption. There fore, I think he is the more worthy.

But, as stated above, it is all water under the bridge now, and we can all think whatever we want.

  33. Engel on January 18th, 2007 at 6:32 pm

Noope, Spike was not contacted by the Powers, Angel was. Whistler made something out of Angel, but why if not because of the Powers? There are so many refrences to the connection to the Powers and Angel. And I’m right. Spike wanted a soul only to satisfy Buffy, he did it for himself. How to do you explain the episode Amends or I Will Remember You? And many more? Angel is the champion of The Powers That Be. And Spike is only a vampire with a soul, nothing greater with him, Angel has a destiny. Though he signed the scroll to convince the black thorn, why did they want him to sign it? When the whole wolfram and hart knew about Spike’s soul? Because Angel is the one in the prophesies of Aberjian, and destinies can not be signed away, his part in the final apocalypse will not fade away…
