Nancy Boy

Nancy Boy

The phrase “Nancy Boy” is used three times in Buffy and Angel. In 6.08 Tabula Rasa, Spike says:

“He’s got his crust all stiff and upper with that nancy boy accent.”

In 2.03 School Hard Spike says:

“A lot faster than nancy-boy there.”

In 1.06 Sense And Sensitivity, Tony says to Angel:

“Seems that sensitivity training I paid for really took, huh, nancy boy?”

Spike also says ‘and I’m nearly out of that nancy boy hair gel I like so much’ in In The Dark.

I love that whole scene in In The Dark, I have the whole thing memorized! I like Buffy more than Angel but I have to say, the scene where Spike is mocking Angel and the girl is one of my all time favorite moments from either series.

It’s been said before, but it’s worth repeating: the Angel-Spike petty male bickering is damn funny, or rather, it’s, um, . . . effulgent.

Oh, yeah. So, I meant to ask, does Spike ever assign the ‘nancy-boy’ moniker to Angel?

Abby M. summed up how I feel. I absolutely adore that scene, the bit about “prancing away like a magnificent poof” gets me every time!

When Spike is fighting the demon in “Get It Done”, he says “Come on, nancy is that all you got?” or something like that. Not a nancy boy moment, but unless it’s a female demon, we can safely say it counts.

Sorry for asking something that you may find completely obvious, but can anyone tell me what “nancy” means here ? Is it a derogative word for Englishmen or something else entirely ?

  8. Jess on April 17th, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Nancy boys is a derogative term which suggests homosexuality.

Oh. Thank you very much !
