Mr. Platt was a cool school counsellor who smoked like a chimney. Buffy visited him as a requirement for being allowed back into Sunnydale High. He was killed by Pete in 3.04 Beauty And The Beasts, whilst doing what he did best: smoking.

I think that Mr Platt is a really significant character, because he signifies a very important moment in Buffy’s life.
Whenever I watch this episode (which comes around every 120 or so episodes in my schedule) I am struck with sadness. Buffy has to go see the school counselor as a condition of re-enrolment. After her initial skepticism, she warms to him and ultimately decides to confide in him. She seeks the counsel of this person, and then it turns out he is dead, not listening, unable to hear her.
I see this as the last time Buffy actually lets out her feelings for about 3 years (til season 6); and the last time ever thatshe really reaches out to someone to say,
