During the seven years of Buffy, all four core Scoobies have the person they love die at some point:
- Xander - Anya dies fighting against The First’s army (7.22 Chosen)
- Willow - Tara is shot and instantly killed by Warren (6.19 Seeing Red)
- Giles - Jenny gets her neck snapped by Angelus (2.17 Passion)
- Buffy - Angel was already dead but Buffy kills him by stabbing him in the heart with a sword (2.22 Becoming (Part Two))

For Buffy…what about Spike? He died in Chosen, and obviously he too was already dead, but she loved him didn’t she? Spike didn’t think that she did but we, or at least I, think she did.

I knew someone was going to ask this question the second I posted this. :)
I don’t want this to end up being a debate for if Buffy loved Spike or not but regardless of if she did or not, she did truely love Angel so I want to leave the triva the way it is. I don’t want to force my opinion onto the trivia (I don’t think she loved Spike, although I wish she did) but for this trivia, I meant it to be everyone’s “one true love” who died even though we can debate all night if she loved Spike or not, we can all agree Angel fits that category.

ok, sorry…

I hope I didn’t come off as being mean, I just didn’t want to come of as being mean. :)

What about Joyce?
I know it’s not romantic love but all the same it is someone she loved
All4Spike on April 20th, 2006 at 5:27 pm
Yes, I agree Jaynesgirl, Buffy losing her mother had a very profound effect on her, and on Dawn and in fact on all of the scoobies, as she was a ‘mother figure’ to both Willow and Xander who had parents they couldn’t relate to.

Is it my imagination or do the Scoobies end up having their heart broken everytime they have a relationship? O_o
Abby M. on April 22nd, 2006 at 10:41 am
Sadly I think thats a must for Sunnydale relationships: It must end up where one of the two people dies or leaves town.
Jaynesgirl: I totally agree with you but when I wrote this trivia, I was thinking in terms of romantic relationsips.

It’s not really a discussion on whether Buffy loved Spike or not when she says it, seeing as Joss said she meant it, and as we all know, Joss is boss.
Longlostscooby on September 9th, 2006 at 3:43 am
Not to sound dumb, but I don’t think Angel died when Buffy stabed him. He just got sucked into a hell dimension. After all, vamps can’t be killed by swords through the chest. And he didn’t dust.
Longlostscooby on September 9th, 2006 at 3:45 am
Actually what really makes me sound dumb is the fact that I can’t spell. That is supposed to be STABBED.

It’s not just Scoobies that have bad and broken relationships, it’s every couple in the entire Jossverse! Observe (beware spoilers):
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
- Buffy/Angel -> Angel left
- Buffy/Riley -> Riley left
- Buffy/Spike -> Buffy finally tells Spike she loves him but he dies
- Willow/Xander -> Doomed from the start. He never liked her the same way she liked him, and when he did acknowledge feelings for her, they couldn’t be together because of a minor detail: THEIR OTHER HALVES.
- Willow/Oz -> Oz left
- Willow/Tara -> Do I even need to explain?
- Xander/Cordelia -> Xander cheated, she never forgave him
- Xander/Anya -> He left her at the alter, they never really got back together and she died at the end
- Giles/Jenny -> Angel killed her, slight drawback
- Giles/Olivia -> She couldn’t deal with the spooky stuff so she left him
Angel the Series
- Cordy/Doyle -> This had serious potential but then he sacrificed himself *sobs*
- Angel/Cordy -> They never got a chance to tell each other “I love you” or be together, dammit!
- Fred/Gunn -> Relationship fell apart after Gunn killed the professor for Fred
- Fred/Wesley - Fred died *sobs*
Firefly/Serenity
- Mal/Inara -> She was hurt by Mal sleeping with Nancy, then she left the ship
- Zoe/Wash -> Wash died *SOBS*
In fact, the only two couples to survive (so far) in the Jossverse would be Simon/Kaylee and Willow/Kennedy. Quite an achievement! But yeah, apart from that, Joss dooms all relationships to badness.

Actually, Angel was still with that stupid Nina Chick when the show ended. Although he could have died. But we don’t want to get into that here.
Mel on September 13th, 2006 at 2:27 pm
Angel had sort of broken up with Nina in Power Play. he gave her tickets for her and her family to go away.
ANGEL: “OK. If I get through this, intact, I’ll come for you. We’ll have
time.”
NINA: “You’re the most amazing man I’ve ever met, but you’re a crappy liar.”
ANGEL: “Go. I’m not asking.”
NINA: “I’ll go. Why on Earth would I stay?”

I’m not entirely sure if Dawn counts as a “core member”, but I would like to point out that Dawn had to stake her first love in “All the Way”.

Wynter, for the couple Willow/Kennedy, if you read the BTVS comicbooks you will know that the two are no longer together.
