In 3.21 Graduation Day (Part One) when Buffy wants to kill Faith, Xander says to her:
“I just don’t want to lose you.”
This is echoed later by Gunn when Fred wants to kill Professor Seidel in 4.05 Supersymmetry. Gunn says:
“If you kill him, I’m gonna lose you.”

Similar sentiments are phrased differently on both programs in many episodes.
Buffy and Angel talk about helping the new murderess Faith in 3.15 Consequences, at one point Angel saying that killing a human being “changes everything.”
In 6.20 Villains, Willow plots Warren’s death, despite Buffy’s warning: “Willow, if you do this, you let Warren destroy you too.”
Earlier that season, Buffy has been tricked by The Trio into thinking she’s killed Katrina (6.13 Dead Things.) In a conversation with Spike, she says “…this is killing me…”
This cool trick (for a show known for ultraviolence against inhuman “demons”) is used to consistently stress the severe effects that human on human violence has on a person emotionally and psychologically. The storylines involving human relationships (even, to a certain extent, between human and demon lovers such as Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Spike, Xander/Anya, etc.) and traumas are so harrowing and moving because they are handled so differently from standard stake/slay/kill human v. demon situations.
