In 3.03 Faith, Hope And Trick, the following dialogue takes place:
Willow: “Oz is a werewolf.”
Buffy: “Long story.”
Oz: “I got bit.”
Buffy: “Apparently not that long.”
This is similar to a conversation which takes place, two episodes later, in 3.05 Homecoming:
Buffy: “Long story.”
Cordelia: “Got hunted.”
Buffy: “Apparently not that long.”
In 7.17 Lies My Parents Told Me:
Robin: “Chip?”
Giles: “It’s a long story.”
Buffy: “The military put a chip in Spike’s head so he couldn’t hurt anyone.”
Giles: “And that would be the abridged version.”
In the Angel episode 1.08 I Will Remember You, Angel and Buffy have the following conversation:
Angel: “It’s kind of a long story.”
Buffy: “You’re new sidekick had a vision, I was in it, you came to Sunnydale?”
Angel: “Okay, maybe not that long.”

Hmm…pretty weird that Buffy used the exact same line in two episodes that are only 3 episodes way from each other. Oh well, in reality people use the same phrases a lot so why not Buffy?

I think I saw this less as sloppy/ careless writing and more as consistent humour.
I also like this cause its like a wee comment on how Buffy’s world is so complicated that she assumes that others find everything complicated too. It’s a good insight into how her personality evolves as she grows up.

What about when Giles says Long Story - and then Buffy gives what he calls the “abridged version”. But I can’t remember what episode its from.

I think that this is the same kind of “joke” that they give to Andrew everytime (The “Show it!” joke when he always started to talking about another thing).
Yes, I swear that there was another “long story” joke in one epis between Giles and Buffy……
Grrr… I have to find out!!!!
