The sequence where Marcie watches as her hand disappears in class in 1.11 Out Of Mind, Out Of Sight (and, indeed, the whole episode) was inspired by a vivid dream Buffy creator Joss Whedon had as a child. He used to think nobody loved him and that he was invisible to those around him.

It’s reminiscent of Back to the Future, where Marty McFly is on stage and his hand starts to disappear.
