Joyce saves her daughter in 2.03 School Hard by hitting Spike over the head with a fire axe. She reminds him of this in a hilarious scene when she meets him again in 2.22 Becoming (Part Two):
Joyce: “Have we met?”
Spike: “You hit me with an axe one time. Remember? ‘Get the hell away from my daughter.’”
Joyce: “Oh. So, do you live here in town?”

Great line for Spike, so matter-of-factly delivered. It introduces the wonderfully sympathetic relationship between Joyce and Mr. Bloody.
Why did they have such an understanding, I wonder?
I also have some vague recollection of a reference to hot cocoa and marshmallows that further establishes their connection. Anybody know what episode from which that might have come?

Hi tadpole, I think this was in Lover’s Walk. Spike’s just been dumped by Dru and needs a bot of mothering.

I think that scene in Lovers Walk really set him apart from all other vampires. I am stealing a remark from an imdb fan here, but compare Soulful Angel barely refraining from drinking Joyce’s blood in Angel (the episode), and Soulless Spike politely drinking hot cocoa in Lovers Walk !
