We discover in 3.17 Enemies that Faith’s mother was a drunk who wouldn’t let her daughter have a puppy:
Faith: “Maybe it’s one of those unhappy childhood things. See, when I was a kid I used to beg my mom for a dog. Didn’t matter what kind. I just wanted, you know, something to love. (kisses Angel) A dog’s all I wanted. Well, that and toys. But mom was so busy, you know, enjoying the drinking and passing out parts of life that I never really got what I wanted.”

Not that the puppy thing is a bad thing - lots of parents don’t let their kids have puppies and they don’t end up killing people.

But maybe Faith would have been ‘good’ if she had known how to love properly

I think that’s the point Joss is trying to make. What Jess is saying is that the puppy thing isn’t really the issue.
