Doc was a demon who looked human but had a long tail, blue blood, black eyes and a lizard-like tongue. He aided Dawn to try and ressurect her mother (5.17 Forever) but later turned on the girl when he discovered she was the Key. Doc worshipped Glorificus. Spike and Xander fought him to retrieve a box he was hiding in 5.21 The Weight Of The World, in which Giles found more information on Glory and the Key. They left Doc for dead but he came back in 5.22 The Gift and cut Dawn so her blood would open the portal. Buffy killed Doc when she pushed him off the platform.

I hate Doc - he’s really creepy. And I especially hate him for stabbing Spike - get off our Blondie Bear!!

See, in my Buffyverse, Doc is a piece of history, since simply leaving a sword in a demon wouldn’t be enough. Surely Xander realised that? Where was the jumping up and down on his head until it was squish and gravel? Precautions, Scoobs!

lol, yeah I have to agree with that.
My housemate and I watched the last two episodes of Season 5 last night (and had Chinese & wine coz it’s our anniversary!!) and I was thinking, surely Xander knows he’s not gonna stay dead… I guess they were just in a rush to get back to stop Glory.

So I’m the only one who happened to think that Doc was a character who’s potential was severely undermined? He’s an interesting demon in that he’s very vast, very durable, and exteremely smart. Also on point, his death was never confirmed. He could take a sword through the chest and you’re telling me that he just couldn’t take the fall? Uh-uh. No dice.
I personally think that Doc’s sweet old man persona would have meshed excellently with a role as a more severe villain or anything else he could have played.
I just like a sword-fighting, reptilian grandpa. Might just be me.

That’s a great point to make. Perhaps the fact that Joel Grey is such an accomplished actor would have made it difficult to get him for a full season, but I also wish that they had given him a much bigger role, as he is so intriguing. I must admit that I like the idea of a sword fighting grandpa too, but I personally am not so big on the reptilian though (I mean, reptiles tend to be very gross).

OK, “later turned on the girl”? Knowing about his worship of Glorificus, maybe he didn’t have benevolent reasons to help Dawn resurrect her mother?

I agree with Capt. Peroxide, knowing about his worship of Glory, and the fact that he has reptilian attributes, I think he recognized Dawn as The Key from the first time he saw her… I could sense it from his black malevolent eyes, hehe…
Why didn’t he tell Glory right away? and why did he help Dawn? I don’t know, I can only speculate he maybe was trying to get Dawn’s trust or something…
I also refused to believe that the fall killed him, maybe he’s still out there!!!

I’m not too sure about Doc realising Dawn was the key. If Doc worshipped Glory he was a lesser being than her, and it doesn’t feel right to me that Doc would sense the Key if Glory couldn’t. But then again, he had closer contact with Dawn that Glory ever did. Yummy brainfood!
I really like the idea that Doc didn’t die, who knows, we may yet see him again!

I think that Doc knew about the true nature of Dawn because of his reptilian attributes.
In some episode (don’t remember which one for now) it’s revealed that reptiles can sense the Key, and the big snake in Shadow is a lesser being than Glory, but could sense the key because it was a reptile.
Anyway, it’s just a theory. Hope we get to see Doc again in Season 8 ^_^

To be fair, though, it had to be conjured to be used. The book in the shop said it could be seen by ‘necromanced animal detection, particularly those of canine or serpent construct’, so it wouldn’t seem that just any reptile can recognize the Key.
