Andy Hoelich

Andy Hoelich was an ex-gymnastics team member at Sunnydale High, turned into a vampire. The Scoobies failed to stake him as he acrobatically got away at the beginning of the episode 3.01 Anne.
Angel credits

In the episode 3.01 Anne, there is a shot of a lonely-looking woman standing on the streets of L.A. The same image is used in the opening credits of the spin-off series Angel.
Another Joan
details | add a comment | suggested by Mel
The season three script book has the blood bank nurse from 3.01 Anne’s name written as Joan.
That would mean another Joan in the Buffyverse as Chantarelle/Lily/Anne’s name was originally Joan and Buffy took the name Joan in the episode 6.08 Tabula Rasa.
Belly Love
details | 2 comments | suggested by Jess
The band Belly Love played at The Bronze in the episode 3.01 Anne on what Xander called “depressing night”. They played the track ‘Back to Freedom’ in that episode. Their performance on Buffy was Bellylove’s first show as they had only just released their first album on their own label, Bad Boy Kitty Records.
Blood bank nurse
details | add a comment | suggested by Jess
In 3.01 Anne, the demon calling himself Ken devised a system where he got the names of healthy homeless kids via the nurse at the local blood donor clinic. No mention is made during the episode if the nurse understood the evil system, or what happened to her afterwards.
Buffy Anne Summers
details | 3 comments | suggested by Jess
Buffy’s middle name is Anne, discovered in the aptly named episode 3.01 Anne. The name was “borrowed” by Lily, who wanted to turn over a new leaf after Buffy saved her yet again. I wonder if Joss Whedon knew that Anne Summers is a chain of British shops which sells adult sex toys and clothing?
Buffy, the Vampire Slayer
details | 28 comments | suggested by Jess
Buffy is called ‘Buffy, the Vampire Slayer’ twice in the show. In 3.01 Anne, she introduces herself to the demon as
“I’m Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, and you are?”
In 7.04 Help, she goes to Cassie’s father’s house and says to Xander:
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer would break down this door.”
Carlos Jacott
details | 2 comments | suggested by Jess
Carlos Jacott, who played the demon masquerading as a human (Ken) in 3.01 Anne, previously played an agent in Being John Malkovich. He has been in She’s All That (with Sarah’s husband Freddie Prinze Jr), The Last Days of Disco, Grosse Point Blank, and he played Ramon the Pool Guy in Seinfeld. Carlos played Lawrence Dobson in Joss Whedon’s Firefly, and Richard in the Angel episode 1.07 Bachelor Party. He is one of five actors to appear in all three of Joss’s TV shows.
Chad Todhunter
details | add a comment | suggested by Jess
Chad Todhunter, who played Ricky in 3.01 Anne, played Cody in Party of Five. He has also been in Never Been Kissed and Scream at the Sound of the Beep. Chad is married to Clementine Ford, who is the daughter of Cybill Shepherd. She appeared in Bring it On with Eliza Dushku and Clare Kramer, and in American Pie with Alyson Hannigan.
Chantarelle/Lily/Anne
details | 18 comments | suggested by Jess
Chantarelle was a member of Ford’s vampire wannabe group in 2.07 Lie To Me. She later turned up again in L.A., this time calling herself Lily (in 3.01 Anne). There she met Buffy who politely informed her that Chantarelle was actually a mushroom. Later still, and using the name Anne (which she ‘borrowed’ from Buffy), she appeared in Angel, where she had become more confident and was running a shelter for the homeless.
Commu-Buffy
details | 4 comments | suggested by ecco
The story of the episode 3.01 Anne is clearly an allusion to the economic philosophies of Karl Marx. According to Marx, the proletariat, abused and maltreated factory workers, are slaves under the whip of the capitalistic, bourgeoise factory-owners. But eventually the proletariat will rise up and destroy their bourgeoise masters. This parallels the plot in 3.01 Anne, where Buffy leads the workers to kill the demon bosses and escape the factory.
Additionally, during the revolt, Buffy fights with a big hammer and a weapon that, given the context, can easily be mistaken for a sickle. The Hammer and Sickle are the international signs of Communism, which developed directly from Marxism.

Demon magnet

Xander’s relationship with the praying mantis in 1.04 Teacher’s Pet is joked about in several later episodes, such as 1.08 I Robot, You Jane, 2.04 Inca Mummy Girl, 3.01 Anne (in which Cordelia says of Xander, “He’s always been attracted to monsters” and later mentions Ampata from 2.04 Inca Mummy Girl, calling her “some hot little Inca mummy girl”), 2.10 What’s My Line? (Part Two) and 4.09 Something Blue, when Willow says,
“Let’s look at your bio: Insect Lady, Mummy Girl, Anya… you’re a demon magnet.”
In 7.14 First Date, Xander says, “Another demon woman was attracted to me” after his date Lyssa turned out to be evil.
Extended scene
details | add a comment | suggested by Mel
In 3.01 Anne the scene in the Bronze where Xander, Willow and Oz are talking about the slaying not getting any easier was originally longer than what was aired:
Willow: “Oh! That reminds me. I asked around about Andrew Hoelich, our gymnastic vampire, and apparantly he used to like to hang out in Hammersmith Park and pick up grills! Or, okay, that should be “girls.”
Xander: “Let’s hope.”
Oz: “Are we thinking old habits die hard?”
Xander: “Worth checking out”
Willow: “Tomorrow night?”
Xander: “Good. And this time we’ll be ready for him. Take him out before he does a Kerry Strug on your face.”
Extra line
details | 1 comment | suggested by Mel
In the episode 3.01 Anne, Buffy and Lily originally had an extra line each when Buffy was handing her apartment over to Lily:
Buffy: “The bathroom works a good part of the time. Don’t bother to flip the mattress ’cause it doesn’t get any better.”
Lily: “I never had a place, you know, that I wasn’t sharing.”
Also when she was giving Lily her uniform to work at the diner:
Lily: “I don’t think I’ll fit into this.”
Buffy: “You could wear it as a hat…”
Following the preacher

When Lily and Buffy are catching up with each other in 3.01 Anne, Lily says,
“Well, before that, I was following this loser preacher and calling myself Sister Sunshine”.
A nice bit of continuity would have been if that preacher had been season seven’s Caleb.
Gandhi
details | add a comment | suggested by Jess
In 3.01 Anne, Buffy says:
“Hey, Ken, wanna see my impression of Gandhi?”
She then kills Ken and says:
“Well, you know, if he was really pissed off.”
Peace-loving Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948) worked for over 20 years to help secure rights for Indians in South Africa. He then spent the rest of his life trying to free India from British rule. He was assassinated by a religious extremist.
In 3.15 Consequences, after Faith killed Alan Finch, she said:
“The guy I offed was no Gandhi.”
In 5.04 Hell Bound Spike says:
“Oh, put your martyr away, Mahatma.”
In The Ring:
Cribb: “Idiot. Thinks he can get out of this by pulling a Gandhi.”
Good family viewing

The following is a scene description of the Hell fight scene from 3.01 Anne:
CRANE DOWN ON: BUFFY
Looking sweaty and cool as searchlights sweep across her face. She’s waiting for the fun.
“The fun” comes in the form of, say, FOUR DEMON GUARDS rushing her. The first gets a hammer in the face, as Buffy spins and hurls her blade in Braveheartian fashion into the chest of the second. The rest of the fun will depend on the dictates of the location, the time at hand, and a certain amount of imput from one of the 100 most creative people in Hollywood. (Not Seth, the other one). Anyway, it’s mean, it’s violent, it’s good family viewing.
Harrison Young

Harrison Young, who played the old man in 3.01 Anne, was old Private Ryan in Saving Private Ryan. He also played Palmer Harper in Spike’s favourite soap, Passions.
Hell description
details | add a comment | suggested by Mel
The following is the description of our first glance at Ken’s world in 3.01 Anne, taken from the season three script book:
INT. MAIN CHAMBER - CONTINUOUS - NIGHT
It’s enormous. And it’s Hell. Part factory, part prison camp, with more that a little Spanish Inquisition thrown in. HUMAN PRISONERS work at hauling enormous stones, doing metal work, any and all demeaning and backbreaking labour. Along the tops of the huge concrete pillars, people have been hung up to die for crimes of one kind or another. Molten metal runs along the gutters into metal vats. Everything is covered with a layer of grime. Carey and David K blow their entire budgets for the year, and Gareth can be seen in the corner weeping.
The people all wear the same kind of nondescript outfit that Lily has been put into, only dirtier. They are practically zombies, submissive and silent. Guards — demons all — patrol around, occasionally stopping to beat a prisoner. Their garb has a flavor of the medieval mixed in with the SS.
It’s all bad.Searchlights at either end constantly sweep the place.
Buffy stops, taking it all in. Ken steps up behind her, in control, since she has nowhere to run.
Hunga-Munga
details | add a comment | suggested by Jess
Buffy’s cross-like throwing weapon in the episode 3.01 Anne is called a hunga-munga. It was purchased from a magazine by the props department. The effect of it spinning through the air was created by attaching it to a ball-bearing and a dowel and then spinning it on the spot.

The following is a description of a scene from the episode 3.01 Anne, with details on how the scene should be shot.
INT. LIBRARY - DAY
(WARNING: if humanly possible, the next five pages — scenes 5 through 7 - - will be done in ONE SHOT, moving from the library to the cafeteria and capturing the vibrant cacophany of the first day at school. You have been warned.)
For once, the library is full of STUDENTS. The mill about, getting books, greeting each other, grabbing text books from boxes on the tables.
Giles walks down the steps with Willow, in mid conversation.
James Lurie
details | 2 comments | suggested by Jess
James Lurie played the teacher Mr. Miller at Sunnydale High in the episodes 2.19 I Only Have Eyes For You, 3.01 Anne and 3.21 Graduation Day (Part One). You might remember him as the teacher who plays hangman with his class in Graduation Day (”They always go for the ‘E’”). James has also been in Picket Fences, Law & Order and Cowboy Up.
Jaws
details | 5 comments | suggested by Jess
Steven Spielberg’s 1975 shark movie Jaws is alluded to a few times in Buffy.
In 2.20 Go Fish, Xander says, “This was no boating accident” - which is a line from the first Jaws movie.
In 3.21 Graduation Day (Part One), Xander and Giles open a page of a book to see a giant monster they may have to face. Xander says:
“We’re going to need a bigger boat.”
This was the phrase used by Brody (Roy Scheider) in the movie when he first sees the size of the great white shark he’s hunting.
In the episode 3.01 Anne, Oz suggests that Willow uses the phrase “This time it’s personal” as it’s a “classic”. He’s quoting from the fourth Jaws movie.
Anya makes an explicit reference to the movie in 7.21 End Of Days when she suggests killing demons with gas cylinders:
“They’d only be useful if something big was attacking, and then we could shove one down their throat and blow ‘em up like Roy Scheider did with that shark in Jaws.”
In 7.19 Empty Places, Xander mentions the abysmal third movie in the Jaws series, made in 1983. After he loses his eye, Xander says:
“Oh, you know what the best part is? No one will ever make me watch Jaws 3-D again.”
In 5.10 Soul Purpose, whilst dissecting Angel in his dream, Fred holds up a Mexican license plate saying:
“Hmm. Came up the gulf stream, huh?”
This is a reference to the first Jaws movie, in which Hooper opens the dead shark and says, “Ah. Just like I thought. He came up with the Gulf Stream - from southern waters” before holding up a licence plate from Louisiana.
Jeff Pruitt

Julia has also been in Charmed, Ophelia Learns to Swim and A Man Apart.
Ken

Ken was an unidentified demon who pretended to be a human named Ken working for the homeless shelter ‘Family Home’. He disguised himself as human by gluing a human face onto his own. He was actually recruiting kids for slave labour in a hell dimension. Buffy killed him when she went to rescue the kids in 3.01 Anne.
Larry Bagby III

Larry played Sunnydale High bully turned gay activist Larry Blaisdale. Larry is a Mormon, but this didn’t stand in his way of playing a gay character (Mormons do not condone homosexuality). Larry was in an episode of Mr. Belvedere with Seth Green when the two were about 12 years old. The two also worked together on Airborne. Larry played another bully in Hocus Pocus, starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Bette Midler.

In the episode 3.01 Anne, the scene where Giles is leaving to catch the plane to Oakland was originally longer than what was aired:

Giles: “I just don’t want you getting into trouble while I’m away. I should go.”

My Fair Lady

In the episode 3.01 Anne, Buffy says,
“I don’t want any trouble. I just want to be alone and quiet in a room with a chair and a fire place and a tea cozy. I don’t even know what a tea cozy is, but I want one.”
This may be a reference to the 1964 musical My Fair Lady, based upon the play Pygmalion, by George Bernard Shaw. In the song “Wouldn’t it Be Loverly” Eliza Doolittle sings, “All I want is a room somewhere far away from the cold night air with one enormous chair. Oh, wouldn’t it be loverly? Lots of chocolate for me to eat. Lots of coal making lots of ‘eat. Warm ‘ands, warm face, warm feet. Oh wouldn’t it be loverly?”
In 2.09 What’s My Line? (Part One), Spike says:
“By George, I think he’s got it!”
This is a paraphrase of the line said by Professor Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady.

Scene descriptions from Anne

The following are scene descriptions from the episode 3.01 Anne.
For Buffy’s dream about Angel on the beach:
The waves crash gloriously onto the bright and silent beach. There is no one to be seen for miles around.
Till BUFFY walks into frame. She is walking slowly, in a light sundress, bare feet digging into the sand. It’s a warm calming tableau and Buffy is soaking it up. She stops, looking off into the distance.CLOSE ON: BUFFY
As she shuts her eyes, letting the sun warm her face, the camera tilts down her body to her midsection — as two male arms slide around her from behind. We tilt back up to see ANGEL holding her, burying his face in her neck. She reaches up behind her to caress his face.
For when Buffy wakes up from the dream:
INT. BUFFY’S APARTMENT - NIGHT
Where Buffy awakens suddenly, a screech and a siren heard outside. We are close on her, pulling slowly back as she gets wearily out of bed, a big tee shirt her sleeping gear. As she walks slowly forward we continue to lead her, seeing just a dark glimpse of a dingy, small apartment. We arm out through the window as Buffy reaches it, leaning out and looking down at her environs.
It ain’t the beach, and it sure as hell isn’t Sunnydale.
It’s the City. Every city, the grimy back streets dotted with the poor and the pro’s. Sort of your worst nightmare of where your kid might run away to.
Buffy leans on the windowsill and stares into the bleak urban night.
From the diner:
ANGLE: NEARBY TABLE
There is a couple at the table, young and without means. Neither of them is past twenty, both a bit strung out. But clearly into each other, and very friendly. The boy is RICKIE. The girl in LILY, though a few people might remember her as Chantarelle in another life.
Seth in the credits

Seth Green was promoted to a regular cast member from the episode 3.01 Anne.
Slippers when not seen
details | add a comment | suggested by lins11
The reason for the amount of shoe “goofs” in Buffy the Vampire Slayer could be simply because of practical issues. When actor’s feet can not be seen/are out of shot, they often wear slippers or flat shoes so that they can be a bit more comfortable during the long shooting hours. This would also explain why they sometimes appear taller from shot to shot.
Sunnydale’s gonna rule!

The Divine Comedy

In the episode 3.01 Anne, Ken asks:
“What is Hell but the complete absence of hope?”.
This may be a reference to the epic poem The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri where the gate to Hell has the statement, “Abandon all hope ye who enter here” engraved on it.
