The Angel episode 4.12 Calvary may be a slight play on words, taking advantage of the fact that the term “cavalry” [kav-uhl-ree] is often mistakenly pronounced “calvary” [kal-vuh-ree].

Lilah: “You don’t get it, do you, twinkie? I’m what I believe in. And you think I got this far by sticking my head in the sand? The Beast that eviscerated me has a boss, and that boss is going to end life as we know it, and nobody is coming to save us! Not Angel, not the Powers that Be, and not the forty-damn-second cavalry!”

Lilah is not saying the name of the episode, she is referring to an armed troop on horseback, a phrase often used to describe someone who is riding in to save the day.

4.12 Calvary“, on the other hand, is another name for Golgotha, the place where Jesus was crucified (according to the Bible). It can also mean an experience of extreme suffering, perhaps the true meaning of this episode title. Of course, the literal translation of Golgotha (and also 4.12 Calvary, coming from the Latin version of Golgotha), is “place of the skull”… perhaps referring to the skull of the soul eater used for the spell?

Lorne says of Lilah in 4.12 Calvary (about the episode Slouching Towards Bethlehem in which his reading of Cordelia was stolen by Wolfram & Hart), “I haven’t forgotten how she poked my head open like a Capri-Sun”. He’s referring to the drink which comes in a foil pouch, often used in packed lunches.

In the Angel episode 4.12 Calvary, when Gunn and Connor have to visit a piece of sacred ground to dig up a soul eater, Gunn says the following line:

“Cordy said this thing was buried by the Chumash a couple of hundred years ago. Don’t expect it to put up too much of a fight.”

The Chumash also featured in the Buffy episode 4.08 Pangs when Hus targeted Buffy for vengeance and Angel returned to Sunnydale to help Buffy after Doyle got a vision of her in trouble.

Cordelia’s role as the big bad in season four was revealed in 4.12 Calvary. This was kept top secret - and the original script even had Angel killing Lilah instead of Cordy:

Lilah hightails it, round a corner, hurries down the long hallway, looks back over her shoulder when WHAM! She’s GRABBED by someone in an open doorway (and very much O.S.). Lilah gasps, real fear on her face.
Lilah: “He’s gonna kill us!”
REVEAL it’s ANGELUS
Angelus: “I know”
He spins Lilah around in one fluid motion - DRIVES the BEAST’S DAGGER into the side of Lilah’s THROAT, destroying her only chance to scream.

In 4.12 Calvary, Cordelia has a vision of how to (falsely) re-ensoul Angel. The spell needs ths skull of a Soul-Eater, and Gunn and Connor are sent to fetch it. The Soul-Eater was buried by the Chumash two hundred years ago but was still able to fight when unearthed. The Soul-Eater is incredibly fast but was decapitated by Gunn.

Whilst she is picking out what to wear to go to the Bronze in 1.01 Welcome To The Hellmouth, Buffy holds up a flowery dress saying:

“Hello, would you like a copy of the Watchtower?”

This is a reference to the Jehovah’s Witness magazine Watchtower.
In 4.12 Calvary, Lilah says:

“Don’t go Watchtower on me Saint Cordelia, I don’t think I could stomach it.”
