Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

details | 1 comment | suggested by Meghann

In 4.21 Primeval, Spike says:

“Alice heads back down the rabbit hole.”

He’s referring to Lewis Carroll’s 1865 book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, about a girl named Alice who sees a rabbit in a waist-coat and follows him down a rabbit hole into a world named Wonderland.

The Angel episode 2.21 Through The Looking Glass is a direct title reference to Lewis Carroll’s sequel novel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In Through the Looking Glass, Alice steps through a mirror into an alternate reality, which is a parallel to the Angel Investigations crew entering Pylea through a portal.

Cordelia quotes the Queen of Hearts within the episode:

Narwek: “Shall we gut the cows now that you might dine on their ignoble flesh, oh most high?”
Cordy: “You’re most high if you think that’s gonna happen. Besides, shouldn’t there be some extended groveling first?”
Angel: “Cordelia?”
Cordy: “Okay. - Off with their heads!”
(Some of the guards draw their swords to obey as the guys flinch in the hold of the rest of them.)
Cordy: “Just kidding.”

Cordelia references Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland when she’s talking to herself in 3.22 Tomorrow:

Cordelia: “Slow poke! I’m late. I’m late. And it’s not a date.”

Cats

While training Connor to fight in 3.22 Tomorrow, Fred offers to pretend to be a vampire. Angel isn’t convinced of her performance:

Angel: “Vampire. You’re not in Cats.”

This is a reference Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats.

Connor’s age

Connor’s age

There is an inconsistency when it comes to Connor’s age. From the third season’s finale, Tomorrow:

Cordelia: “I’m not telling your sixteen year old boy that.”

In 4.07 Apocalypse, Nowish:

Cordelia: “It’s called being 18. If you make it past 21, things get a lot better.”

This stems from the gang not knowing how long Connor was in the hell dimension.

They send an electric current through a person to incapacitate them, but are supposed to be non-lethal.

Skip

details | 2 comments | suggested by Jess

Skip was a metal-clad unclassified demon who worked for the Powers That Be, by overlooking Billy’s torture in an unknown hell dimension in 3.02 That Vision Thing. His will kept Billy locked in the cage of flames while robbing him of his ability to scream. He fought Angel, who freed Billy to help Cordelia. Skip later appeared as Cordelia’s demon guide when her visions made her slip into a coma in 3.11 Birthday. He was responsible for showing her how her life could be without Angel, and making her part-demon when she refused to turn her back on her friend.
He assisted Cordelia to ascend and become a higher being, and later tried to further Jasmine’s coming by telling Angel to kill Cordelia in order to save the world. He was eventually shot and killed by Wesley.

The one you love is…

The one you love is…

In Angel’s season three finale, 3.22 Tomorrow, we hear the following dialogue between Cordelia and Groo:

Groo: “I am not the one you love. He is.”
Cordy: “He is? Who he?”
(Cut to AI’s office, where someone knocks on the door.)
Angel: “Yo! Hey, Lorne! Come on in!”

The word “Yo” is Spanish for “I”, “Me”. Perhaps the writers wrote the dialogue (and the very quick scene to scene transition) so that Angel would be, unknowingly, answering Cordy’s question.

Tom Sawyer

In the episode 3.22 Tomorrow, Cordy and Angel have the following conversation:

Angel: “I don’t even own a TV. He’s gonna wanna watch TV. Not too much, I mean, after homework and chores. He’s gonna need clothes, weekly allowance… What’s good nowadays? Fifty cents, a dollar?”
Cordy: “Yeah. If you’re Tom Sawyer painting the fence.”

Tom Sawyer is the title character of the Mark Twain novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. This is a popular 1876 novel about a young boy growing up in the South.
