Daniel Holtz

Holtz was a notorious vampire hunter in the mid-1700s. Darla and Angelus killed his entire family and turned his daughter into a vampire in 1764, so he sought revenge for their actions. A time-shifting demon named Sahjhan offered to help him to travel in time to find Angel and Darla. In present day L.A., Holtz organised a band of others like him - those who had lost a loved one to vampires. The group included Justine, whose life had been dulled by the loss of her twin sister.
Holtz saw his chance for revenge when Angel and Darla’s son Connor was born. He stole Conner away from Angel to a hell dimension where he raised him as Stephen. Conner returned, now a teenager, and Holtz followed him. Now an old man, Holtz asked Justine to kill him and make it look like a vampire bite for the ultimate revenge - to turn Angel’s son against his real father.

In 3.09 Lullaby, Lilah says:
“Harvey? It’s Lilah. I got a job for you… Angel Investigations. Yeah, full cleaner service.”
This could be a reference to two ‘cleaner’ characters played by Harvey Keitel in the movies Pulp Fiction and Point of No Return.

In the Angel episode 3.09 Lullaby, Holtz sings a lullaby to his daughter, which he later sings again right before blowing up Caritas. This lullaby is a Welsh folksong called Ar Hyd y Nos (All Through the Night). The Welsh lyrics were written by John Ceiriog Hughes and it has been translated into several languages, including English.
For The Sopranos fans: in the episode ‘Denial, Anger and Acceptance’, Meadow Soprano and her group sing the English version of the song.
Julie on playing pregnant Darla

Julie Benz (Darla) said the following of playing a heavily pregnant vampire:
“I had to wear a leotard that was stuffed with a pillow and it was pretty uncomfortable, but I think the biggest challenge during all those pregnant scenes was being on camera without any make-up on. That’s pretty much a challenge when you’re an actress, just to go on camera completely raw.
“Yeah, I really felt at that point she was pretty strung out. Her whole world was rocked. She never thought she could get pregnant and then all of a sudden she’s carrying this child and she’s experiencing this soul for the first time in four hundred years. [There’s] the realisation that as soon as the baby’s born the soul’s going to go away, and it’s the first time she really experienced true love, so she was going through a lot emotionally.
“I just didn’t think that she would have time to really think about how she looked. I don’t think it was a priority, and so for me as an actor it was important that I reveal that. Not get caught up in my own vanity as an actress, and portray the character as where she really was.”

Holtz sings the lullaby ‘All Through the Night’ to his daughter in 3.09 Lullaby. This is the English version of the Welsh folksong ‘Ar Hyd y Nos’. The only problem is - he sings the song in 1764, but the English lyrics were not written until 1884, by Sir Harold Boulton.
