Catch the bolt
details | 1 comment | suggested by HarFang
Catching crossbow bolts in flight seems to be a national sport in the Buffyverse:
- The Master catches one, shot by Buffy, in 1.12 Prophecy Girl
- Buffy catches one, sprung by a booby-trap and aimed at Cassie, in 7.04 Help
- Angel catches one, shot by Faith, in 1.18 Five By Five
Dalai Lama

In 1.18 Five By Five, Cordelia references the Dalai Lama:
Cordy: “Oh, please! He was cursed by gypsies. What’s Angel gonna do? Drag a bunch of them in here to shove a soul down this guy’s throat?”
Wesley: “He may be a ruffian, but he’s already got a soul, and therefore - deep down inside - an urge to do what’s right.”
Marquez: “No way. I’m gone.”
Angel: “Shut up and sit down.”
Cordy: “I guess you’re right, Wesley. He’s just like the Dalai Lama.”
In Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama is believed to be an incarnation of Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of Compassion; when the Dalai Lama dies, his soul is believed to pass into the body of an infant.
Eliza Dushku

Eliza Dushku played the vampire Slayer Faith. Eliza was born on December 30, 1980 in Boston. Her middle name is Patricia. She was raised in a staunch Mormon household, though is not particularly religious. She is half Albanian and half Danish and has 3 older brothers named Aaron, Ben, and Nate, who is also an actor. Her parents are both college professors. Eliza was legally emancipated from her parents during the filming of Buffy because of strict laws on the hours that a minor is allowed to work.
Eliza used to appear at the Watertown Children’s Theater in Massachussetts, as a sign-language interpreter for any hearing-impaired audience members.
Eliza was discovered aged ten at the end of a five-month search for the perfect girl to play the lead role of Alice opposite Juliette Lewis in the film That Night. Since then she has been in several films, and has worked with actors such as Robert DeNiro, Ellen Barkin, Leonardo DiCaprio, Paul Reiser, and Jim Belushi. Eliza played Arnold Schwarzenegger’s daughter in True Lies. She appeared in Bring it On (with Clare Kramer, who played Glory), Wrong Turn, The Kiss, Soul Survivors, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and That 70’s Show. Eliza also starred in her own TV show Tru Calling.

The following dialogue is from 4.06 Wild At Heart:
Veruca to Oz: “Number one? No. I gotta go with hound dog.”
Willow: “Me, too. That’s a great song. I mean, Elvis, what a guy.”
Veruca to Willow: “You a big Elvis fan?”
Willow: “The biggest. Well, I mean, after Dingoes, of course.”
In 5.08 Shadow, we see Willow wearing a shirt that says ‘Elvis Lives’.
Cordelia references Elvis Presley when she says to Xander in 2.16 Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered:
“Damn it Xander what’s going on? Who died and made you Elvis?”
In 1.18 Five By Five, Cordy references the King of rock’n'roll again when she says:
Cordelia: “Oh, and we should pick up the tab for lunch. Nothing says success less than splitting the bill.”
Angel: “I didn’t bring any money with me.”
Cordelia: “Okay, Elvis, when you’re a big star, you can get away without carrying cash.”
Gunn says to Angel in 2.08 Shroud Of Rahmon:
Gunn: “Don’t give me orders, Elvis!”
In 4.03 The House Always Wins, Angel references Elvis and his wife, Priscilla:
Angel: “Oh, now I remember that room! Elvis and Priscilla’s wedding reception, 1967. Yes! Alright. It’s not like I was, you know, really invited. They just put me near the dais.”
Faith
details | 17 comments | suggested by Jess
Faith was chosen as a vampire slayer when Kendra died. She was tough, sexy and flirtatious and she and Buffy immediately found conflict with each other (3.03 Faith, Hope And Trick). Faith spent some time helping Buffy in her slaying work but felt overshadowed by the older slayer and became jealous of her. Faith accidentally killed a man, and realised that she had a dark streak. She teamed up with the Mayor, who was plotting an evil ascension and became the direct enemy of Buffy (3.15 Consequences). Faith poisoned Angel, and Buffy discovered the only cure was for him to drink the blood of a slayer. She and Faith fought and Buffy stabbed her nemesis, putting Faith in a coma (3.21 Graduation Day (Part One)). When Faith awoke she found the world a changed place (4.15 This Year’s Girl). She left Sunnydale and went to L.A. where she eventually redeemed herself and went to prison to serve time for her murders. Faith was broken out of prison to aid Wesley against Angelus, before heading to Sunnydale to help Buffy fight the First.
Faith’s surname was never mentioned on screen but the Watcher Sourcebook claims it is Lehane.
Faith’s affection requests

These are three similarities in dialogue before Faith’s altercations with Buffy, Angel, and Angelus.
In 3.21 Graduation Day (Part One):
Faith: “Ready to cut loose?”
Buffy: “Try me.”
Faith: “Okay then. Give us a kiss.”
Faith: “Hey, baby! Come give us a hug.”
Angel: “I was hoping you’d stop by. Always good to see old friends. What’s this? Wooden bullets?”
In 4.13 Salvage:
Angelus: “Hey, Faith. Nice to see you again. You’re looking choice as ever. Oh, that’s right. We’ve never really met, have we?”
Faith: “So what are you waiting for? Come out and give me a kiss.”
Angelus: “No, no, no. You come to me. That’s it… getting warmer.”
Five by Five
details | 6 comments | suggested by Jess
Faith often uses the phrase “Five by Five” to say she’s ok. The origin of the phrase is unknown, but it can be related to a poker term, a piece of wood, US Army talk for a radio signal being loud and clear, and it’s also a reference to the movie Aliens. Five by five was used in the space program in the 1960’s, used by Apollo astronauts. In the transcription of the air-to-ground Apollo 11 mission are the words: “Roger, 11, You are coming in five-by-five here. Beautiful signal.”
1.18 Five By Five became the name of a Faith-centered episode in Angel’s season one.

Learning from mistakes

The following line of Angel’s was cut from 1.18 Five By Five due to length:
“I seem to remember trying with Faith once….I had her in a safe place, on the verge of facing herself and what she’d done. Then her watcher knocked me unconscious with a tire iron, took her away, and let her escape. Which gave her the opportunity to put a poison arrow in my back” (stares at Wesley for a moment) “Then I nearly killed Buffy. Not that one should ever learn from mistakes”.

The following conversation is from 1.21 Blind Date:
Lindsey: “I’ve made -uh - some bad choices.”
Holland: “Well, I’ll say.”
Lindsey: “Sending the rogue Slayer after the vampire?”
Holland: “Among other things. But you’ve had a nice success in court. You’re starting to pull out of it. I’m fond of you, Lindsey. I’d like to see you moving up here.”
Lindsey is referring to hiring Faith to kill Angel in 1.18 Five By Five.

The library main entrance in 2.19 Belonging is the same building where Faith shot her crossbow at Angel in 1.18 Five By Five. It was later reused as the lobby where Illyria opens a portal in 5.16 Shells.
Vampire invitation rule
details | 18 comments | suggested by Jess
In vampire mythology (and the Whedonverse), a vampire cannot enter a person’s home unless it has been invited. This is first seen in the Buffy episode 1.07 Angel:
Angel: “It’s all right. A vampire can’t come in unless it’s invited.”
There has been some debate as to whether Buffy actually invited Angel into her home in that episode, but she does quickly say to him, “Get in! C’mon!” as they’re being chased by vampires. When Angel first became a vampire he returned home to kill his family. From 1.15 The Prodigal:
Father: “Be gone, unclean thing! A demon can not enter a home where it’s not welcome. He must be invited!”
Angel: “That’s true. - But I was invited.”
Angel looks to the doorway. His father turns and sees Angel’s sister slumped against the wall.
Dad: “Och!”
Angel: “She thought I returned to her – an angel.”
A vampire can enter a public place such as a school or hospital (this is seen in 2.17 Passion and 2.18 Killed By Death). In 2.17 Passion Angel says the sign outside the school says ‘Romatia transicara edicatorum’ which translates to ‘Enter all ye who seek knowledge’. Vampires can also enter hotel rooms, which are considered public. In 2.09 The Trial, Angel says to Gunn after he has entered a motel room:
Angel: “Oh, Motel, public accommodation. She didn’t live here.”
Another vampire invitation rule is clarified in 5.02 Real Me: only someone who lives in a residence can invite a vampire in:
Xander: “Yeah, actually, she– Harmony– kind of happened to sort of get an invite.”
Buffy: “You guys can’t invite her in. I mean, only someone who lives here can…
If the owner of a house is dead, a vampire can enter. This is seen in 3.21 Graduation Day (Part One) when Angel enters the home of the dead Professor. It is also seen explicitly in 1.15 The Prodigal (Angel can only enter the home of Kate’s father after he has been killed) and in 2.04 Untouched (Angel enters when a victim on life support dies). In the latter example we see a visible barrier ripple when Angel tries to enter.
When a vampire is invited into a home once, it can enter again at any point, unless a reversal spell is done. The spell was first seen in 2.17 Passion, after Angel lost his soul and started stalking Buffy. The last words of the incantation (read by Willow at Buffy’s house) are “Hicce verbis consensus rescissus est,” which translates into English roughly as “By these words permission is rescinded.” Buffy uninvited Spike from her home in 5.14 Crush, Harmony was uninvited in 5.02 Real Me, and Dracula was uninvited in 5.01 Buffy Vs Dracula.
There have been several goofs/continuity errors concerning vampires and invitations in the Whedonverse:
- When Angel and Buffy are running from the Three in 1.07 Angel, they take refuge in Buffy’s house. As they close the door, one of the Three gets his arm through the door before Buffy forces him back out. But he was a vampire and also uninvited, so how did he get his arm in?
- A similar event occurs in 2.16 Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered - when Drusilla pushes Buffy’s door down, her hands go into the house - but Drusilla was never invited in.
- Angel says that he needs an invitation to enter Buffy’s dorm room in 4.20 The Yoko Factor, but Sunday and her gang didn’t need one in 4.01 The Freshman. This doesn’t count only for Buffy - the vamps are able to access Eddie’s room as well, and presumably they can get into the rooms of the other students they killed. How do they do that?
- In 1.17 Eternity, how can Angel jump through the window into Rebecca’s apartment to save her from the intruder? He was never invited in, and Rebecca only said to him to “Stop by”. Is this enough of an invitation?
- In 1.18 Five By Five, Faith is torturing Wesley in the apartment of the man she injured previously in the episode. When Angel finds them, he walks straight into the apartment… no invite needed. If Faith had killed the man, Angel would not have required an invitation. However, in 1.19 Sanctuary, the following dialogue is heard between Kate and a fellow officer:
Kate: “So do we think she is the one who threw the party here?”
Kendrick: “The guy who lives here identifies her as the woman who mugged him. Put him in the hospital, stole his keys, his wallet. We’re lifting prints now. My bet is - we get a match.”It’s apparent he is alive, therefore Angel should not have been able to enter his apartment. (It’s possible that Angel called the victim to ask permission to enter but this would be a very strange conversation indeed!)
- There is some confusion over who invited Spike back into the home he shared with his mother in 7.17 Lies My Parents Told Me, but this could have been a servant who lived there.
- In 5.15 A Hole In The World, Angel and Spike enter Lindsey and Eve’s residence without an invitation.

The following conversation is from 1.18 Five By Five:
Lindsey: “Well, we’ll just add slander to breaking and entering. While we’re on the subject, I remember you throwing one of my clients through a window. Killed him if I’m not mistaken.”
Angel: “Yes. I seem to remember. (Turns to point at the window) The window was just about that size. Hmm. Too bad the body burned up before it hit the ground. I might have needed a good lawyer.”
They are referring to Russell Winters in City Of.
[Goof] Cordy’s place

In many episodes Cordelia’s apartment number was 212 and she had a porch outside her door, but in 1.18 Five By Five, her apartment number is 6, she has neighbours and her door is inside.
