Xander’s wrist is broken by Olaf in 5.11 Triangle and he wears a sling in 5.12 Checkpoint and 5.13 Blood Ties. It was previously broken in 2.21 Becoming (Part One). His girlfriend Anya’s shoulder was dislocated in 5.02 Real Me and she wore a sling in 5.03 The Replacement. Olaf also continuously beat Xander with his hammer, which was supposed to be extremely powerful - enough to beat the god Glory to a bloody pulp in 5.22 The Gift. So if the hammer was able to hurt Glory to the point of helplessness, how was it that Xander, an ordinary human, was able to get right back up from multiple hits (including the head) from the hammer?

In Joss’s commentary from ‘Chosen’ (at least I think it was ‘Chosen’) he says that he got a lot of flack about the uber-vamps being easily killed by the likes of Giles, Xander, etc when Buffy was almost beaten to near-death by one. His reply was that it was true. If it worked better for the story to make them easy to kill, then they were going to do it. So, my point is this: it was better for the story to let Xander get off easily and for Buffy to pound Glory like a slab of beef.

I was wondering about why Xander was not hurt worse by the hammer. I decided it depended on how hard the Troll hit him with it. Maybe he didn’t use a lot of force because he kind of liked Xander. He probably just used enough power to just knock him down, but not kill him.

I like this thoery, pinkhawk, I’m sure Buffy was quite a bit more revved up when she was beating Glory than Olaf was when he was casually swinging the hammer at Xander.
