Bloody William

Bloody William

A flashback to Spike’s past in 5.07 Fool For Love reveals that his original vampire name ‘William the Bloody’ (first mentioned in 2.03 School Hard) was actually given to him when he was human - but he was called ‘William the Bloody Awful Poet’. William/Spike was shy and nerdy as a human, and it took him many years to prove himself when he first became a vampire. We later discover in the episode 7.17 Lies My Parents Told Me that after he was vamped by Drusilla, Spike went on to sire his mother, to cure her of her illness.
We discover in 5.07 Fool For Love that Spike got his trademark scar on his right eyebrow from a fight with a Chinese slayer during the Boxer Rebellion. As vampires heal rapidly, leaving no scars (as evident on the bodies of both Spike and Angel throughout the years), and since Spike is already a vamp when he gets the injury to his eyebrow, how would he scar permanently?

I read somewheer that James Marsters got that scar when he was mugged. they probably needed a way to explain it. they could have done better, though by saying he got it as a human or something.

When James went in for make-up for the first time for School Hard, he told the make-up artist he had the scar so he should try to cover that up. The artist thought it would be cool to bring that out so not only did he not cover it up, he used make-up to enhance and bring it out!

That’s not entirely true. In several season six episodes when Spike is shirtless (which is just about every episode in season six) you can clearly see the scar from Glory’s torture session on the left side of his chest, the cut she made when she compared Vampires to apples.

  4. MagicBone on October 24th, 2005 at 11:49 pm

This is random, but did anyone get what Glory was talking about when she compared a vampire to an apple?

  5. buffybot on October 25th, 2005 at 12:00 am

you know how people amuse themselves by trying to peel all the skin off an apple in one go (so it goes in a spiral shape)? she was gonna do that with spike i think. eeewww

  6. MagicBone on October 25th, 2005 at 12:33 am

    I see….oh, very ewww

  7. Smash on October 25th, 2005 at 1:38 am

It was gross, but I loved lines like that that showed just how cruel Glory really was. She was too evil for hell after all.

  8. MagicBone on October 25th, 2005 at 2:09 am

Well you gotta be pretty damn evil to be a hell god and kicked out of hell by your fellow hellgods.

  9. ildjarn on October 25th, 2005 at 11:25 am

Or maybe she was too good, so she got kicked out, and wanted to do something evil to get back.

  10. buffybot on October 25th, 2005 at 3:55 pm

Glory was one of three hellgods who ruled over a demon dimension. Her power started to outstrip that of the other two and they expelled her from their dimension

This is probably just me trying to rationalize one of Joss’s oversights, but quicker healing doesn’t necessarily mean no scaring. I have a wicked burn on my arm that has healed, but there is still a mark there.

  12. mairceridwen on November 21st, 2005 at 9:10 pm

Slayers heal fast too, but Buffy still has the scar from the angry puppy

  13. Culf on September 12th, 2006 at 4:13 pm

I heard somewhere that the slayers sword was blessed. That would probably leave a scar on a vampire.

  14. lovinWillow on February 3rd, 2007 at 8:37 am

    Besides, the scar looks cool.

  15. Wynter on February 5th, 2007 at 5:08 pm

I agree, the scar looks really cool. Another possible explanation though, is that the scar is there because it’s in the shape of a cross.

I didn’t come up with that, I just remember reading it somewhere else on this site. It’s pretty plausible, though.

Remember that Spike isn’t the only vampire with scars that we have seen.

There’s also Kakistos (Seen in Faith, Hope and Trick) and Angel (in Doppelgängland).

  17. hypersk on March 30th, 2007 at 1:48 am

Oops, my mistake, Angel with scars can be seen in The Wish, not Doppelgängland like I said before…

  18. HarFang on April 14th, 2008 at 10:51 pm

I agree with all these explanations. The only thing that bothers me a bit is that the first time we see Spike, the scar still looks red and fresh.

Totally off the subject on scars here but in “Lies My Parents Told Me ” how did Spike & Dru get into Spikes house? his mam didn’t invite them in as she was suprised to see him saying she hasn’t seen him in days???

  20. HarFang on April 22nd, 2008 at 2:36 pm

There’s another trivia on that topic (check under Spike’s lack of invitation). The most convincing theory (barring plot holes, which exist only in legends :D ) is that some servant mush have let him in.

  21. Bells on April 22nd, 2008 at 2:39 pm

I thought that alright but does it not have to be the owner?

  22. HarFang on April 22nd, 2008 at 2:57 pm

Good question ; I think that living there is enough, and a lot of servants lived at their master’s house at the time.

  23. Bells on April 22nd, 2008 at 3:00 pm

    that’ll do for me :)
