We see Anya’s very old-fashioned apartment for the first time in 5.03 The Replacement, and see it again in 5.10 Into The Woods.

I wonder how Anya pays her rent?
What is her income source post-human and pre- Magic Box?
Her apartment is lovely, with some very interesting antiquities decorating the space.
Did Xander never wonder how she supported herself?
Some possibilities:
- She was paid a good wage when she was a vengeance Demon. The wage would have been in cash or in kind, because I doubt she held an account at the local bank (ID issues).
- She invested this money well, being the rabid capitalist she is, and lives off the dividends.
- In addition to the vengeance game, she had a side operation running, taking the money and assets of those she killed.
Any other thoughts… or have I missed something?

That’s some good thinking. I always wondered where people got their money. Like how Angel bought that hotel, or how Spike can always afford cigarettes and liquor.

From memory the Hyperion Hotel was rent free thanks to same legal handiwork from a cape wearing roleplay geek who was super rich and in dire need of some friends.
It’s funny though, procuring money was so much more of an issue on Angel than it was on Buffy.
We certainly see Spike struggling with the cash economy post-chip.
I also wonder about Tara, especially post ‘Family’: how did she support herself through school?
Anyway, questions questions….

I think that Nabbit only gave Angel advice on the best mortgage for the hotel. He definately paid something for the hotel because at the end of season 2 when they are getting ready to go to Pylea to save Cordy, Angel leaves a message for Gunn saying that the mortgage on the hotel is in the company name.
Angel did find all that money that he helped that girl hide in Have You Now or Have You Ever Been and that was the episode he decided they moving in to The Hyperion, so I think maybe he used that.

Spike does approach Buffy in the Doublemeat Palace and urge her to quit her menial employment, offering that he can get money, seemingly with ease.
It makes sense. Even all chippified-like, he should be able to secure funds.
Plus, regarding Angel and Anya and Spike, one would think that after all these years they’d have learned to invest long-term (or at least to save junque that would become antique).

All very true

I think Angel returned the money (with a note) that he found at the Hyperion. I seem to remember something about that. If it wasn’t stated directly then it was implied.
Anyway, I’m pretty sure Angel (and Angelus) had enough sense to stash money away for a rainy day, whereas Spike lives day-to-day with his funds. The only expenses Spike has are blood and cigarettes and the Scoobies helped him out with that, post-chip, for information or help. I don’t believe Spike paid rent for squatting at his crypt. :)

I remember a rare Anya/Tara scene in which Anya tells Tara how to invest and seems to make a mint herself.

Isn’t there a S6 scene where Anya’a walking down a dark alley and Spike jumps out all bumpy-face, implying that scaring people is how he gets his mitts on what cash he can?

I just wanted to attempt to clear a couple of things up here, if I can.
This came in “I Was Made to Love You” in season five.

This has nothing to do with this thread but I couldn’t find anywhere else to put my comment. It’s about Xander’s speech to Anya at that end…I just found it interesting that after seeing how Buffy treated Riley, he realized how anya fulfilled him completely. It just stuck out to me because Xander had a crush on Buffy for sooo long and it’s like he was realizing he would have never been enough for her either. Xander is like Riley in that he is honest, dependable, and decent. Just a thought for any Xander/Buffy shippers out there… I know the writers flirted with the idea of them dating.
