When Buffy goes to the mausoleum during school hours in 1.02 The Harvest, Angel appears behind her to try and stop her going into the sewers. It’s the middle of the day - how did Angel get to the mausoleum? He didn’t come from underground because Buffy’s facing the entrance to the sewers and it’s daytime so how did he get all the way through the graveyard without being burnt to a crisp?

Angel said to Buffy in this scene:
“I knew you’d figure out this entryway sooner or later. Actually, I thought it was gonna be a little sooner.”
So maybe he had been waiting there for her all night.

But he came in behind her, through the same entrance. Wouldn’t she have noticed him when she first walked in if he was already in there?

That is very possible! I was thinking that it lends weight to the fact that some people believe that Joss didn’t intend for Angel to be a vampire right at the beginning ;)

I can believe that Angel would have been lurking in the shadows waiting for Buffy to turn up. It’s true he does enjoy a good lurk. But he would have had to stay there until the sun set again, so how come Xander doesn’t see him when he follows Buffy into the sewers?

If there’s one passage into the sewer system, there might be another one in the mausoleum, leading somewhere else (why not to a place near Angel’s flat –I’m not sure it’s a real flat, as he certainly doesn’t pay rent, but it certainly looks like one.)
By the way, does anyone know what the viewers thought or expected the first time Buffy aired ? Was it a huge surprise to discover Angel’s true nature or did some people expect it ?
