In season two’s What’s My Line (Part 1), Willow and Xander are trying to cover for Buffy’s absence at the career fair. Xander starts to say to Principal Snyder: “For what it’s worth…” Snyder interrupts him with:

“It’s worth nothing, Harris. Whatever comes out of your mouth is a meaningless waste of breath. An airborne toxic event.”

“Airbourne toxic event” comes from Don DeLillo’s novel White Noise, which won the National Book Award in 1985. In the book’s second part, a chemical spill from a rail car releases an “airborne toxic event”, prompting an evacuation.

Airborne Toxic Event is also the name of an American indie rock band from Los Angeles. Their songs include “This Losing,” “Sometime Around Midnight” and “Gasoline”.
