Buffy’s death in 1.12 Prophecy Girl, albeit very brief, was enough to activate another Slayer, Kendra. The two met in season two’s 2.09 What’s My Line? (Part One). Giles said in that episode that the event was unprecedented.

Seems likely that the council would:
a) have found out about this earlier (slayers fight a lot and heal fast - can’t imagine this was the first time this happened)
b) capitalize on it now that they know. how hard would it be to stop the slayer’s heart for a minute–they do it in flatliners :)
Anyway, this is still one of the coolest plot developments in the history of television. remember how amazing it was the first time Kendra said “I’m Kendra…the vampire slayer”.
BringTheNoise on August 24th, 2005 at 10:02 pm
I think it could well have been the first time. Buffy is certainly the first Slayer to have a ‘gang’ - and the other Watchers all seem a bit crappy in the fighting department, thus not giving them time to revive any dead Slayers.

Plus, isn’t it often stated that Buffy is an ‘Exception,’ in the fact that she has a group of friends who help her, and know her secret identity?
ant4buffy on August 25th, 2005 at 12:10 pm
Yeh it is. Kendra comments on it in Whats My Line Part Two

I always thought that when Buffy died in season 5’s The Gift there was no other Slayer called as Faith was still a Slayer, however this cant be true as Faith was called even though Buffy was still alive. Therefore there must have been another Slayer after Buffy’s second death. Some of my friends and I were talking about this and they believed that the first ‘potential’ killed by the Bringers in the 1st scene in Lessons in Istanbul was actually the Slayer called after Buffy’s 2nd death. Although this is probably not true, and there is no proof of this it was interesting to think that maybe there was a Slayer out there that was killed by the Bringers without Buffy or the Scoobies knowing it. Though I am probably completely wrong i thought I would tell you all what I thought!
AnyaRocks on December 29th, 2005 at 12:41 am
but technically, Buffy wasn’t alive. Because she died at the hands of The Master, Kendra was called. So according to the mystical line of the slayer, Kendra was the only slayer alive with slayer powers. So, in comes Faith when Kendra dies. I hope that made sense.
AnyaRocks on December 29th, 2005 at 12:47 am
The prophecy is that when one slayer dies another one is called, which we all know (god, we’re so smart), so when Buffy died, Kendra became the activated slayer, the ‘main’ one, if you like…. tell ya what, I’ll make it easier. The mystical line is treating the activation thing as if Buffy was never revived. According to them, Buffy was dead since she firt died (god, I ramble on)
hannah_wish01 on December 29th, 2005 at 12:50 am
Yes, that made it better, its just I always assumed Buffy was the ‘main’ Slayer which is foolish of me as she stopped being that after she died in Prophecy Girl. The name of the show should have been changed then to ‘Buffy, the vampire slayer again’ just to help easily confused people such as myself!

When Dawn thinks she’s a potential, she says that Buffy would have to die for her to become the slayer. Shouldn’t someone have corrected her, and told her that Faith would need to die?

Quick thought, a lot of people have questioned that the council should have known a slayer could die and be revived so two slayers could co-exist: All the other slayers worked alone when their watcher sent them on their missions, who would be with the slayer to revive her if she was, in fact, killed?
ant4buffy on January 20th, 2006 at 12:44 pm
I thought the best idea would be to kill a slayer and then revive her in the council’s headquarters or whereever. Like the film Flatliners, the slayer dies and then is revived by cpr etc.

Hey, can anyone tell me why there isnt a THIRD slayer when Buffy dies in The Gift? It would have become a bit of an over-used arc, but TECHNICALLY there should be another slayer!
MissKittyFantastico on April 23rd, 2006 at 1:20 am
I think this has been discussed elsewhere on the Trivia Site
ant4buffy on April 23rd, 2006 at 2:47 pm
Actually it has been answered above by AnyaRocks. Buffy was the slayer, she died, Kendra was called, Kendra died, Faith was called. Faith has never died. Simple.
outforawalkbitch on August 18th, 2006 at 11:27 pm
Yes, it’s easy to understand
BUFFY DEAD
KENDRA CALLED (SHE IS THE SLAYER)
BUFFY GIVEN CPR (IS ALIVE AGAIN)
KENDRA AND BUFFY ARE SLAYERS
KENDRA DIES
FAITH IS CALLED (SHE IS THE SLAYER)
IF BUFFY NOW DIES(THE GIFT) NO ONE WILL BE CALLED BECAUSE SHE IS JUST A BLIP IN THE SLAYER LINE
IF FAITH DIES A NEW SLAYER WILL BE CALLED BECAUSE SHE IS THE ACTUAL SLAYER.
THINK OF IT LIKE KINGS AND QUEENS, BUFFY ABDUCATED FROM HER SLAYER THRONE, BUT KEPT HER POWERS, IF SHE DIES A NEW QUEEN WONT BE APPOINTED BECAUSE FAITH IS QUEEN.

There way I see it is that there are various ways to interpret Buffy’s 2nd death. From what I’ve caught so far, these are the main theories on the subject:
1. Buffy was no longer the Slayer once she died in Prophecy Girl. She was still a Slayer, but the Slayer’s line no longer ran through her blood, but Kendra’s. That’s why when Kendra died in Becoming, the line was moved on to Faith. So regardless if Buffy died or not again, she’d always be ‘a’ Slayer, but no longer ‘the’.
2. Since Buffy died in a mystical way, there was no way for her to trigger another Slayer. So that’d explain why the First didn’t want to kill her nor Faith, because both would’ve been able to trigger two of the potential Slayers.
3. Another Slayer was actually called after Buffy died in The Gift, but perhaps the Scoobies nor the WC got a hold of her, localized her or ever heard of her before. Much like it took ‘em a while to figure out Buffy, when she was activated in L.A. And since they didn’t expect one, no one bothered with it.
*4. Or, since Buffy no longer had the Slayer’s line running through her, when she died in The Gift, by her being resurrected again, it made the Slayer line run through her once more. Hence both Faith & Buffy had it in ‘em to activate a new Slayer from there on.
I’m in particular favour to the reasoning in #4; I and a few people also interprete that way.
The way I see it is, it’d make sense that way, wspecially considering the Promo/Trailer for S6 and Bargaining. It was something between, “Into each generation, a Slayer is born… [cut to Buffy’s hand bursting from the ground] Buffy lives!” I think what they were trying to approach with that, was that Buffy was now an active Slayer much like Faith. I don’t know how, but I really liked the reasoning behind that. Considering not only the Scoobies, WC and everyone else didn’t know about another Slayer being activated after Buffy died, and neither did the First. Since he knew “all”, it’d be pretty inane if he also thought Buffy could activate another potential Slayer in S7 if she died.
Boyslayer on March 27th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
there was no slayer called after buffy died in the gift..joss said it himself…faith would have had to die to make a new slayer…buffy’s death in prophecy girl activated kendra..dru killing kendra activated faith. joss said that. it’s simple really, its just people seam to have wanted another slayer which is what’s stopping you all from being able to understand…
Talmah on June 18th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Spuffy Freak , I rather go for your third theory , even if Whedon say something else in interview .
ormaybemidgets on June 19th, 2008 at 2:25 am
We’ve been over this a bajillion times, but I’ll try it again.
No slayer was called after Buffy’s season five death because the slayer line did not run through her anymore. It was in Buffy, she died in season one, it passed to Kendra; Kendra died in season two, it passed to Faith. Then Buffy dies in season five and it didn’t matter at all, as far as calling new slayers. She just didn’t have that power anymore.
(PS: no meanness intended! And I miss our talks on here… where is everyone - the pre-crash crowd?)
