Technically it is possible to shoot oneself with a rifle. However, it is difficult to aim and in all truth getting a shot which is instantly fatal is a tricky matter. Since he is in a public place, if he merely wounded himself he probably wouldn’t die of blood loss before someone found him and rushed him to hospital.
A handgun would have been a much wiser choice. Maybe the rifle was the only thing he could get his little hands on?

Doesn’t he put the scope on as well?? I know that’s all a bluff so we can have the surprising reveal that it’s not Jonathan after all, but the dinner lady, who’s planning on taking everyone out. Still, I find it a bit ludicrous that the only thing he’d be able to find to kill himself would be a high powered rifle. Having said that I do live in a country where guns are actually pretty damn hard to come by…so maybe I’m just unaware of the ubiquity of rifles in the US!

I always kinda wondered if Jonathan was really just planning to kill himself or if he was actually going to kill people at school. We know he’s not treated well and he’s later involved in plots that would harm Buffy. He seems so innocent… I just wonder if he’s a bit darker or in more pain than we are led to believe.

I forgot — also, telling Buffy he was going to kill himself leaves him out of trouble. ^_^

I have a theory: He got the gun, intending on killing everyone at school but at the last second (Possibly only moments before Buffy found him) he decided he would only kill himself. Possible?

I don’t know. I’m quite the Jonathan fan and he seems awfully sincere when he tells Buffy he only intended to kill himself. It’s very subjective though. I’m sure his mother would say the same thing!

Buffy says at the end of the conversation that she could have taken the rifle already, and Jonathan hands it over. Maybe he only does that because he doesn’t want to get beaten up, but he would have gone ahead otherwise!!

I am SO happy you caught that! That is one of the first things I thought of when he said he was going to kill himself. I couldn’t figure out how in the world he was going to manage that with that really long gun. My sister kept looking at me like I was ridiculous for thinking so hard about it. So now I know I’m not alone. :-)

Jonathan could easily take off his shoe and use his toe to pull the trigger. I don’t think he ever meant to kill anyone else but himself. As for the scope, it was there, might as well assemble the whole gun.

Actually it is possible to kill yourself with a rifle, you sit with the barrel against your stomach and press the trigger with your toe. I saw it on an episode of Forensic Files (a show that deals with cases that actually happened, unlike CSI.)

I’m extremely well versed in the world of firearms, both their use and the tech stuff, so when that episode aired it immediately struck me as pretty ridiculous that he would be using a custom made, take down sniper rifle to commit suicide. I mean where would he even get it?

I don’t think he was thinking straight at the time (obviously) but when you want to kill yourself anything will do….
